02.01.10 Finding The Real Truths About SOA And Cloud Computing By
Mike KavisI had the pleasure of presenting at Utah St.'s 26th Annual IT Seminar yesterday. The conference was planned and run by the students. I was impressed both by the work the students did and the support and guidance given by Utah St. Very impressive! I must also add that the snow covered mountains of Logan, Utah was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. My presentation was focused on what is SOA and Cloud Computing and how can we get past all the hype and all the myths and actually deliver real business value. After all, if you are not doing for the business, why bother? SOA & Cloud Computing: Beyond The Myths ![]() View more presentations from Mike Kavis.
There are two very extreme views out there. One view is that the there is nothing new with SOA and Cloud Computing and it is nothing more than hype. I am so tired of hearing "we have been doing this for years". My response is we have been doing phones for years, you can't tell me there is nothing new happening with phones these days. The other view is that SOA & Cloud Computing are silver bullets. Simply outsource the infrastructure to the cloud and life is grand. WRONG! The answer lies somewhere between those two views and really depends on these factors: time, money, architecture, people, and change. How well you balance those factors greatly influence the results you will have. My key point is that when things fail, it is caused by people not by the technology. It all comes down to architecture. One must fully understand the risks, design for them, and deliver business value in the process. Check out the slides for more information.
