Yahoo Releases Search BOSS 2

Search engines are complex machines with a variety of moving parts. After all, we've seen that - despite no longer running their own algorithm or ads - Yahoo has remained the second most popular search site on the web. This is thanks to a number of other services they offer, including Yahoo Answers, Yahoo Games, Yahoo Dating, Yahoo Mail, and a number of other integrated sites. Further, Yahoo's powerful index of sites and search data has an appeal all its own.

One Yahoo element covers both categories (search data and independent service): Yahoo Search BOSS. BOSS is a developer API that lets developers of web apps, smartphone apps, and so forth, gain access to search information for any purpose they can dream up. This powerful database and the coding API that gives full access to it are available for low-cost "CPM" rates. For every thousand queries the API makes, the developer will be charged a minimal rate - ranging (based on what portions of the database the developer needs to access) anywhere from $0.10 to $0.80.

Far more appealing, however, is the new ability of Search BOSS 2 to generate income for the developer. Yahoo places advertisements on the search pages, and splits revenue with the developer. (The Yahoo ads, however, are coming from the Microsoft Ad Center; Yahoo's deal with Bing included handing over all advertising to their former competitor.) This means that clever developers and site owners can function as a mini-search site owner

Search BOSS has been around for some time, but the version two was released in early April of 2011. In addition to standard refinements of the API, Yahoo's new iteration offers specialized searches for spelling, a limited version of the web (at a lower cost), and a self-service center for billing and monetization.
